The COVID-19 Greek

WHO decides the Greek alphabets for the Wuhan virus and why and how? Is Delta not followed by Epsilon? Why jump so many alphabets to Omikron? Are they afraid that if they go sequentially, one of the variants will be Xi?

Α α alpha a

Β β beta b

Γ γ gamma g

Δ δ delta d

Ε ε epsilon e

Ζ ζ zêta z

Η η êta ê

Θ θ thêta th

Ι ι iota i

Κ κ kappa k

Λ λ lambda l

Μ μ mu m

Ν ν nu n

Ξ ξ xi ks

Ο ο omikron o

Π π pi p

Ρ ρ rho r

Σ σ, ς sigma s

Τ τ tau t

Υ υ upsilon u

Φ φ phi f

Χ χ chi ch

Ψ ψ psi ps

Ω ω omega ô

Well, Sydney Morning Herald gave the reason in "Why WHO chose 'Omicron' not 'Xi' for new COVID variant" (added 2021-11-28).

Birthday Celebrations

On the third day, which was Pharaoh's birthday, he made a feast for all his servants and lifted up the head of the chief cupbearer and the head of the chief baker among his servants. He restored the chief cupbearer to his position, and he placed the cup in Pharaoh's hand. But he hanged the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted to them. (Genesis 40:20-22 ESV)

A friend of mine told me that Jehovah's Witnesses do not celebrate birthdays because the Bible record only two birthday celebrations (Genesis 40:20-22, Mark 6:21-29). Both were by unbelievers and were presented in a bad light. I did not know that the Bible actually has accounts of birthday celebrations and someone died in each of the celebration.

Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee. When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests.
The king said to the girl, "Ask me for anything you want, and I'll give it to you." And he promised her with an oath, "Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom."
She went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?"
"The head of John the Baptist," she answered.
At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: "I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter."
The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her. So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John's head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison, and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. On hearing of this, John's disciples came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.
(Mark 6:21-29 NIV)
