Repentance

Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. (Acts 20:21 KJV)

Repentance in Greek - to think differently afterwards; a change of mind.
Repentance in Hebrew - to change the direction.

We need repentance toward God. We need to think differently about God and Jesus Christ. We recognize our sins and realized our need for a savior. When we do that, we can have faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

Biblical Liars

Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins. (Ecclesiastes 7:20 ESV)

When God uses men to accomplish His purpose, He can only use sinful men. Among the sins that sinful men commit is lying.

Shiphrah and Puah
So the king of Egypt called the midwives and said to them, "Why have you done this, and let the male children live?" The midwives said to Pharaoh, "Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them." (Exodus 1:18-19 ESV)

Rahab
But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. And she said, "True, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from. And when the gate was about to be closed at dark, the men went out. I do not know where the men went. Pursue them quickly, for you will overtake them." (Joshua 2:4-5 ESV)

Joshua
And Joshua and all Israel pretended to be beaten before them and fled in the direction of the wilderness. (Joshua 8:15 ESV)

Samuel
The LORD said to Samuel, "How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons." And Samuel said, "How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me." And the LORD said, "Take a heifer with you and say, 'I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.' (1 Samuel 16:1-2 ESV)

David
So he changed his behavior before them and pretended to be insane in their hands and made marks on the doors of the gate and let his spittle run down his beard. (1 Samuel 21:13 ESV)
When Achish asked, "Where have you made a raid today?" David would say, "Against the Negeb of Judah," or, "Against the Negeb of the Jerahmeelites," or, "Against the Negeb of the Kenites." (1 Samuel 27:10 ESV)

Elisha
And Elisha said to him, "Go, say to him, 'You shall certainly recover,' but the LORD has shown me that he shall certainly die." (2 Kings 8:10 ESV)

Jeremiah
Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, "Don't tell anyone you told me this, or you will die! My officials may hear that I spoke to you, and they may say, ‘Tell us what you and the king were talking about. If you don't tell us, we will kill you.' If this happens, just tell them you begged me not to send you back to Jonathan's dungeon, for fear you would die there."
Sure enough, it wasn't long before the king's officials came to Jeremiah and asked him why the king had called for him. But Jeremiah followed the king's instructions, and they left without finding out the truth. No one had overheard the conversation between Jeremiah and the king.

Two Gospel Presentations

Peter's Sermon at Pentecost (Acts 2:14-36) was a presentation of the gospel to those with biblical foundation background. Paul's Sermon on Mars Hill (Acts 17:22-31) was a presentation of the gospel to those without any biblical foundation. Peter quoted scriptures to support his case. Paul had to make known about God as revealed in the Holy Bible. He made known to them that the true and living God is Creator, Governor, Provider, Savior and Judge. God is the Creator of the world thus opposing indirectly their opinion that there were many gods. Yet He is distinct from His creation. He is Lord of heaven and earth and hence the Governor of this whole universe. Paul also spoke about Christ crucified. He had declared that Jesus Christ is the Savior of men. He also declared that Jesus would judge the world as He had repeatedly told His followers. His resurrection is an assurance that God approved the person, teaching and work of Jesus Christ. This includes the teaching of Christ that He is the Judge appointed by God to judge the world in righteousness. God confirmed His appointment of Jesus Christ as judge by raising Him from the dead. This was based on a sermon by Rev Tang T K at JSM Singapore this morning.

But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: "Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:
"'And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.
And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke; the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day.
And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.'
"Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know - this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. For David says concerning him,
"'I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken; therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; my flesh also will dwell in hope.
For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption.
You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.'
"Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says,
"'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool."'
Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified."
Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?" And Peter said to them, "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself." And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, "Save yourselves from this crooked generation." So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
(Acts 2:14-41 ESV)

So Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, "Men of Athens, I observe that you are very religious in all respects. For while I was passing through and examining the objects of your worship, I also found an altar with this inscription, 'TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.' Therefore what you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you. The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands; nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things; and He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation, that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; for in Him we live and move and exist, as even some of your own poets have said, 'For we also are His children.' Being then the children of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and thought of man. Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent, because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead."
Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some began to sneer, but others said, "We shall hear you again concerning this." So Paul went out of their midst. But some men joined him and believed, among whom also were Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman named Damaris and others with them. (Acts 17:22-34 NASB)

What Can We Learn From Samson?

But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. (2 Corinthians 4:7 ESV)

My daughter asked me what can she learn from Samson. He seemed to do nothing except lusting and killing.

A lot of people want to study biographies of Bible personalities to learn something from their lives. This is not wrong. But the Bible is written from the primary perspective that it is all about God. Samson may not teach us anything from his life. But Samson showed us that God can use such a man to accomplish His purpose.

God chose Jacob to be the ancestor of all Israelites. He was a cheat and a liar. Jesus chose unlearned fishermen to start Christianity. Jacob's character was transformed in the course of his dealings with God. The unlearned fishermen transformed into bold apostles preaching the good news.

Then there were those who seemed to be gifted, like Moses and Paul. Moses would have been a great Egyptian leader if he had not been called to lead the Israelites. Paul could have been a famous rabbi or a Roman philosopher if he had not follow Christ. How many great men from the dead Egyptian civilization affect our lives today? How many famous rabbis or Roman philosophers do we know? But Moses and Paul still has an impact in the modern world. So even the gifted were made greater when God choose to use them.

Famous men and women in the Bible were chosen to show that it is God who enable. If God can use Samson, then God can use us. He set the bar low so that nobody can have the excuse to say that he cannot serve.

Then he said, "Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed." (Genesis 32:28 ESV)

Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus. (Acts 4:13 ESV)

The LORD said to Gideon, "The people with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel boast over me, saying, 'My own hand has saved me.' (Judges 7:2 ESV)
