But his officers tried to reason with him and said, "Sir, if the prophet had told you to do something very difficult, wouldn't you have done it? So you should certainly obey him when he says simply, 'Go and wash and be cured!'" (2 Kings 5:13 NLT)
People like to believe that the greater the reward, the greater effort is needed. Great thing like eternal life will certainly mean that some extremely great effort must be required of those who wanted it.
First, the bad news. No man can attain eternal life by their own effort.
Next, the good news. You only need to believe in the One who can give eternal life to you.
But nobody believe that eternal life is just a matter of believe. They will try all kinds of difficult tasks and do all kinds of good works. It is so difficult to believe.
And they said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household." (Acts 16:31 ESV)
