God's Mercy the Sole Criteria for Salvation

"Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity (Matthew 7:22-23 KJV)."

Many people like to use their works as the basis for salvation. If only they could depend solely on God's mercy, like the publican in Jesus's parable, who smote his breast and cried out, "God be merciful to me a sinner (Luke 18:13 KJV)."
