When Nothing Seems to Make Sense

Sermon by Adrian Rogers, "When Nothing Seems to Make Sense".
  1. Don't demand to understand;
  2. Don't fail to be faithful;
  3. Don't bow to bitterness;
  4. Don't be unwilling to wait;
  5. Don't let dreams dissolve.
Notable quotes:
Don't doubt in the dark what God has shown you in the light.
It is always too soon to quit, never too late to start.

Who among you fears the LORD and obeys his servant? If you are walking in darkness, without a ray of light, trust in the LORD and rely on your God. But watch out, you who live in your own light and warm yourselves by your own fires. This is the reward you will receive from me: You will soon fall down in great torment. (Isaiah 50:10-11 NLT)

For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. (1 Peter 2:20 ESV)

Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday. (Psalm 37:4-6 ESV)

Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil. (Psalm 37:8 ESV)

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. (1 Peter 5:6 NIV)

The Gift of the Holy Spirit

God gave us the Holy Spirit as a gift.
And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. (John 20:22 ESV)
And Peter said to them, "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:38 ESV)
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. (John 14:16-17 ESV)
To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. (1 Corinthians 12:7 ESV)
The Holy Spirit is the down payment of our inheritance, until the redemption of the possession, to the praise of his glory. (Ephesians 1:14 CSB)
This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. (Galatians 5:16 KJV)

Work of the Holy Spirit - 3

The Holy Spirit is sent by our Lord Jesus the Anointed One as our Helper. This word παράκλητον (paraklétos) has been translated as Comforter (KJV) Advocate (NIV,NLT,NET) Helper (ESV,NASB) Counselor (CSB,HCSB).

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. (John 14:16-17 ESV)

These are the work of the Holy Spirit:
Teach us
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. (John 14:26 ESV)

Speak about Jesus
"But I will send you the Advocate - the Spirit of truth. He will come to you from the Father and will testify all about me. (John 15:26 NLT)

Guide us
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. (John 16:13 ESV)

Glorify Jesus
He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. (John 16:14 ESV)

Convict the world of sin, righteousness and judgement
And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God's righteousness, and of the coming judgment. (John 16:8 NLT)

Help us in our prayer
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. (Romans 8:26 NIV)

Give gifts
It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have. (1 Corinthians 12:11 NLT)

Bear fruit
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23 ESV)

Pour God's love into our heart
And hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. (Romans 5:5 NIV)

Our Unchanging God

Our God is unchanging.
For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed. (Malachi 3:6 KJV)
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. (Hebrews 13:8 ESV)

He keeps His promises.
God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it? (Numbers 23:19 ESV)
And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent. (1 Samuel 15:29 KJV)

He even confirmed it with an oath.
For example, there was God's promise to Abraham. Since there was no one greater to swear by, God took an oath in his own name, saying: "I will certainly bless you, and I will multiply your descendants beyond number." Then Abraham waited patiently, and he received what God had promised. Now when people take an oath, they call on someone greater than themselves to hold them to it. And without any question that oath is binding. God also bound himself with an oath, so that those who received the promise could be perfectly sure that he would never change his mind. So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. (Hebrews 6:13-18 NLT)

Our faith and hope lies in His faithfulness.
It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:22-23 KJV)
If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself. (2 Timothy 2:13 NASB)
What if some were unfaithful? Does their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God? By no means! Let God be true though every one were a liar, as it is written, "That you may be justified in your words, and prevail when you are judged." (Romans 3:3-4 ESV)

Jesus - Predicted And Fulfilled - 3

Before Jesus was born, who is He and what He will do is written in the scriptures.
Then I said, "Look, I have come. As is written about me in the Scriptures: (Psalm 40:7 NLT)

He will be the seed of a woman (not of a man!)
And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. (Genesis 3:15 KJV)

He shall be a descendant of Abraham.
And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice. (Genesis 22:18 KJV)
Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. (Galatians 3:16 KJV)

He shall come from the tribe of Judah.
The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until he to whom it belongs shall come and the obedience of the nations shall be his. (Genesis 49:10 NIV)

He shall be a descendant of David.
And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever. (2 Samuel 7:16 KJV)

He shall be born in Bethlehem.
But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. (Micah 5:2 KJV)

He will be born of a virgin.
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14 KJV)

He will come as the Anointed One 483 years after the decree to rebuild Jerusalem.
Know and understand this: From the issuing of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until an Anointed One, the ruler, will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks. It will be rebuilt with a plaza and a moat, but in difficult times. (Daniel 9:25 CSB)

He will preach in Galilee.
But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. (Isaiah 9:1 ESV)

Eric Liddell Quote

Watched this on YouTube, "The Story of Eric Liddell".

Victory over all the circumstances of life comes not by might, nor by power, but by a practical confidence in God and by allowing His Spirit to dwell in our hearts and control our actions and emotions. Learn in the days of ease and comfort, to think in terms of the prayer that follows, so that when the days of hardship come you will be fully prepared and equipped to meet them. - Eric Liddell

Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts. (Zechariah 4:6 KJV)

Testing God

"If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down. For it is written: "'He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'" Jesus answered him, "It is also written: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'" (Matthew 4:6-7 NIV)
And Jesus answered him, "It is said, 'You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.'" (Luke 4:12 ESV)
We should not test Christ, as some of them did - and were killed by snakes. (1 Corinthians 10:9 NIV)
Do not put the LORD your God to the test as you did at Massah. (Deuteronomy 6:16 NIV)
Do not harden your hearts as at Meribah, as on that day at Massah in the wilderness where your fathers tested me; they tried me, though they had seen what I did. (Psalm 95:7-8 CSB)
Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness, where your fathers put me to the test and saw my works for forty years. (Hebrews 3:7-9 ESV)
Peter said to her, "How could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also." (Acts 5:9 NIV)
Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? (Acts 15:10 KJV)
They deliberately tested God, demanding the food they craved. (Psalm 78:18 CSB)
They quickly forgot His works; they did not wait for His counsel, but craved intensely in the wilderness, and tempted God in the desert. So He gave them their request, but sent a wasting disease among them. (Psalm 106:13-15 NASB)

Again the LORD spoke to Ahaz, "Ask the LORD your God for a sign, whether in the deepest depths or in the highest heights." But Ahaz said, "I will not ask; I will not put the LORD to the test." (Isaiah 7:10-12 NIV)
Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. (Malachi 3:10 NIV)

There are many verses in the Bible that warn us against testing God. However, there is one verse that God asked us to test him, that is in tithing.

Massah And Meribah

All the congregation of the people of Israel moved on from the wilderness of Sin by stages, according to the commandment of the Lord, and camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. Therefore the people quarrelled with Moses and said, "Give us water to drink." And Moses said to them, "Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?" But the people thirsted there for water, and the people grumbled against Moses and said, "Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?" So Moses cried to the LORD, "What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me." And the LORD said to Moses, "Pass on before the people, taking with you some of the elders of Israel, and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink." And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. And he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the quarrelling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the LORD by saying, "Is the LORD among us or not?" (Exodus 17:1-7 ESV)

Following God

Following God may have some unexpected results.

You may run into a storm.
Now when Jesus saw a crowd around him, he gave orders to go over to the other side. (Matthew 8:18 ESV)
And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. (Matthew 8:23-24 ESV)

It may take longer than expected, for example 40 years for a 11-day journey.
Normally it takes only eleven days to travel from Mount Sinai to Kadesh-barnea, going by way of Mount Seir. But forty years after the Israelites left Egypt, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses addressed the people of Israel, telling them everything the LORD had commanded him to say. (Deuteronomy 1:2-3 NLT)

You may end up in famine.
So Abram went, as the Lord had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran. He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated, and the people they had acquired in Haran, and they set out for the land of Canaan. (Genesis 12:4-5 CSB)
There was a famine in the land, so Abram went down to Egypt to stay there for a while because the famine in the land was severe. (Genesis 12:10 CSB)

Herod And Galerius

On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people. They shouted, "This is the voice of a god, not of a man." Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died. (Acts 12:21-23 NIV)

King Herod persecuted the church and died, eaten by worms. Another persecutor also died in the same way. Roman emperor Galerius conducted the most severe persecutions of Christians in the history of the Roman empire. The quote below was taken from this article "The most loathsome disease of the emperor Galerius – Hektoen International" described the disease he died from.

QUOTE
The Roman emperor Galerius (260-312) was appointed by Diocletian as second in command for the Eastern part of the empire (Caesar) and became its sole ruler after the latter’s death (Augustus). A fierce persecutor of Christians, his mode of death has long interested historians. In 2012 Kousoulis et al suggested that he died from a severe infection of the skin and soft tissue of the pubic area called Fournier gangrene, basing their diagnosis on the description by the ancient historian Lactantius:
"And now when Galerius was in the eighteenth year of his reign, God struck him with an incurable disease. A malignant ulcer formed itself in the secret parts and spread by degree. The physicians attempted to eradicate it… But the sore, after having been skimmed over, broke again; a vein burst, and the blood flowed in such quantity as to endanger his life… The physicians had to undertake their operations anew, and at length they cauterized the wound… He grew emaciated, pallid, and feeble, and the bleeding then stanched. The ulcer began to be insensible to the remedy as applied, and gangrene seized all the neighbouring parts. It diffused itself the wider the more the corrupted flesh was cut away, and everything employed as the means of cure served but to aggravate the disease. The masters of the healing art withdrew. Then famous physicians were brought in from all quarters; but no human means had any success… and the distemper augmented. Already approaching to its deadly crisis, it had occupied the lower regions of his body, his bowels came out; and his whole seat putrefied. The luckless physicians, although without hope of overcoming the malady, ceased not to apply fermentations and administer remedies. The humors having been repelled, the distemper attacked his intestines, and worms were generated in his body. The stench was so foul as to pervade not only the palace, but even the whole city; and no wonder, for by that time the passages from waste bladder and bowels, having been devoured by the worms, became indiscriminate, and his body, with intolerable anguish, was dissolved into one mass of corruption."
The authors concluded that the description of the case was consistent with a Fournier gangrene, a rapidly spreading and still often fatal progressing soft tissue infection of the pubic area by many organisms, leading to tissue breakdown, small vessel occlusion, and spread of the infection. The disease was named after Jean Alfred Fournier (1832 –1914), a French  dermatologist and venereologist, even though it had been described by Baurienne in 1764. But other accounts just suggest that Galerius merely died from an infected wound, and that the deaths of other persecutors of Christians have been described in a rather similar gruesome manner – as they clearly deserved!
UNQUOTE

After he was struck with the loathsome disease, emperor Galerius issued the Edict of Toleration on 30th April 311. In the edict, he asked Christians to pray to their God for his welfare, but to no avail. He died on 5th May 311.

Camel Meat - Bible vs Koran

Can we eat camel meat?

Yet of those that chew the cud or have the hoof cloven you shall not eat these: the camel, the hare, and the rock badger, because they chew the cud but do not part the hoof, are unclean for you. (Deuteronomy 14:7 ESV)

The sacrificial camels we have made for you as among the symbols from Allah: in them is (much) good for you: then pronounce the name of Allah over them as they line up (for sacrifice): when they are down on their sides (after slaughter), eat ye thereof, and feed such as (beg not but) live in contentment, and such as beg with due humility: thus have We made animals subject to you, that ye may be grateful. (Quran 22:36 Yusuf Ali version)

Slow To Anger

The LORD passed before him and proclaimed, "The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation." (Exodus 34:6-7 ESV)

But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness. (Psalm 86:15 ESV)

The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. (Psalm 103:8 KJV)

The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. (Psalm 145:8 ESV)

The LORD is slow to anger and great in power, and the LORD will by no means clear the guilty. His way is in whirlwind and storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. (Nahum 1:3 ESV)

Many people said that God in the Old Testament is an angry God. Richard Dawkins, in his book "The God Delusion", wrote of God as follows:
QUOTE
The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character of all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.
UNQUOTE

But God, in His proclamation to Moses, declared Himself to be merciful and gracious. Many other verses in the Old Testament also attest to God as one who is slow to anger.

But God will by no means clear the guilty. That makes Him appeared angry to the guilty, because the wrath of God remains upon them.

But I know my God is slow to anger, otherwise I would have perished long ago.

If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? (Psalm 130:3 KJV)

Enter not into judgment with your servant, for no one living is righteous before you. (Psalm 143:2 ESV)

All Nations Will Become Part Of Christ's Kingdom

All the nations of the world today will become part of the Kingdom of Jesus. It was prophesied by Daniel and also in the Revelation of Jesus Christ.

"During the reigns of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed or conquered. It will crush all these kingdoms into nothingness, and it will stand forever. That is the meaning of the rock cut from the mountain, though not by human hands, that crushed to pieces the statue of iron, bronze, clay, silver, and gold. The great God was showing the king what will happen in the future. The dream is true, and its meaning is certain." (Daniel 2:44-45 NLT)

Then the sovereignty, power, and greatness of all the kingdoms under heaven will be given to the holy people of the Most High. His kingdom will last forever, and all rulers will serve and obey him." (Daniel 7:27 NLT)

Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices shouting in heaven: "The world has now become the Kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign forever and ever." (Revelation 11:15 NLT)

Resistance is futile.

Why are the nations so angry? Why do they waste their time with futile plans? The kings of the earth prepare for battle; the rulers plot together against the Lord and against his anointed one. "Let us break their chains," they cry, "and free ourselves from slavery to God." (Psalm 2:1-3 NLT)

So let all the governments of the world heed this warning given 2900 years ago. It was given well in advance so there is no excuse.

Now then, you kings, act wisely! Be warned, you rulers of the earth! Serve the Lord with reverent fear, and rejoice with trembling. Submit to God's royal son, or he will become angry, and you will be destroyed in the midst of all your activities - for his anger flares up in an instant. But what joy for all who take refuge in him! (Psalm 2:10-12 NLT)

High And Low

For though the LORD is high, he regards the lowly, but the haughty he knows from afar. (Psalm 138:6 ESV)

For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: "I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite. (Isaiah 57:15 ESV)

Thus says the LORD: "Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool; what is the house that you would build for me, and what is the place of my rest? All these things my hand has made, and so all these things came to be, declares the LORD. But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word. (Isaiah 66:1-2 ESV)

How To Have Long Life

How to have long life? According to the Bible, the way to have long life is to fear God and honour your parents.

The fear of the LORD prolongs life, but the years of the wicked will be short. (Proverbs 10:27 ESV)
Walk in obedience to all that the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live and prosper and prolong your days in the land that you will possess. (Deuteronomy 5:33 NIV)
Observe therefore all the commands I am giving you today, so that you may have the strength to go in and take over the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, and so that you may live long in the land the LORD swore to your ancestors to give to them and their descendants, a land flowing with milk and honey. (Deuteronomy 11:8-9 NIV)
Wisdom will multiply your days and add years to your life. (Proverbs 9:11 NLT)
Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. (Proverbs 3:16 ESV)

"Honor your father and mother" (this is the first commandment with a promise), "that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land." (Ephesians 6:2-3 ESV)
Honor your father and your mother so that you may have a long life in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. (Exodus 20:12 CSB)
Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. (Deuteronomy 5:16 KJV)
My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you. (Proverbs 3:1-2 ESV)
Hear, my son, and accept my words, that the years of your life may be many. (Proverbs 4:10 ESV)

Works Versus Fruit - 2

Our works are filthy and unacceptable to God.
But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. (Isaiah 64:6 KJV)

Only the work of the Holy Spirit can bear fruit acceptable to God.
Bear fruits in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. (Luke 3:8 ESV)

Abraham's Faith and Works

He took him outside and said, "Look up at the sky and count the stars - if indeed you can count them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be." Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness. (Genesis 15:6 NIV)

What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, discovered in this matter? If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about - but not before God. What does Scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness." Now to the one who works, wages are not credited as a gift but as an obligation. However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness. (Romans 4:1-5 NIV)

Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. And the scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness," and he was called God’s friend. You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone. (James 2:21-24 NIV)

Abraham believed the LORD, and that faith alone was credited to Abraham as righteousness by God. But that faith was demonstrated by Abraham's belief that his estate will not be inherited by Eliezer of Damascus, but by his own offspring, who will be like the stars in the sky. Till today, Abraham's offspring is still not like the stars in the sky. In fact, there are more Chinese and Indians than Abraham's descendants.

Believe Or Be Damned

He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. (Mark 16:16 KJV)

Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. (John 3:18 ESV)

Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him. (John 3:36 ESV)

Valley's Battle Won At Hill Top

This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. (Galatians 5:16 KJV)

This is an extract from a sermon by Adrian Rogers, "Victory Over the Flesh".

Our three enemies:
  1. World - external foe - Egypt
  2. Devil - infernal foe - Pharaoh
  3. Flesh - internal foe - Amalekites
God called the Israelites out of Egypt. God called us out of the world.
Where are the Israelites suppose to go? They were to go to Canaan.
On the way, they had water from the rock and then they were attacked by the Amalekites.
  1. Spirit-filled life - Canaan
  2. Water from the Rock - the Holy Spirit
  3. The Rock - Christ
Flesh is our internal enemy, represented as Amalekites. When did the Amalekites attack?
  1. Unexpectedly, after the biggest blessing;
  2. Indirectly, attacking the weakest;
  3. Arrogantly, without fear of God.
How did the Israelites win the battle against the Amalekites?
Moses went up to the hill with Aaron and Hur and Joshua battled the Amalekites in the valley.

Whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses’ hands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. (Exodus 17:11-12 ESV)

The battle in the valley is won at the top of the hill.
The victory over the flesh is God given.
Stand in the victory that is already won.

Pictures From Exodus

Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink." And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. (Exodus 17:6 ESV)
For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. (1 Corinthians 10:1-4 ESV)

End Of The Millennium

And when the thousand years are ended, Satan will be released from his prison and will come out to deceive the nations that are at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them for battle; their number is like the sand of the sea. (Revelation 20:7-8 ESV)

During the millennium, Jesus will rule the world with no opposition. When the millennium is over, Satan will be released from his prison. He will go out to deceive the nations to fight against Jesus. I wonder what his slogan will be. Perhaps it will be this - "Better to live with lies under democracy than to live with truth under the dictatorship of Jesus."

Truth Is A Tyrant And Jesus Is Truth

Truth is a tyrant. It does not believe in democracy. Even if everybody in the world vote that 1 + 1 = 3, when truth says 1 + 1 = 2, truth will win. Anyone who does not support truth will be destroyed.

Jesus saith unto him, I am ... the truth, ... (John 14:6 KJV)

When Jesus return to rule the world in the millennium, there will be no democracy. He will rule the nations with a rod of iron.

Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. (Psalm 2:9 KJV)
She gave birth to a male child, one who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron, but her child was caught up to God and to his throne, and the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, in which she is to be nourished for 1,260 days. (Revelation 12:5-6 ESV)
From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. (Revelation 19:15 ESV)

Those who refuse to submit will perish. But those who support Him will be blessed. He will set them free. He will give them authority to rule.

Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him. (Psalm 2:12 KJV)
Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. (John 8:32 NIV)
The one who conquers and who keeps my works until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron, as when earthen pots are broken in pieces, even as I myself have received authority from my Father. (Revelation 2:26-27 ESV)

Albert Barnes (died 1870) Predicted Israel's Return To Holy Land (1948)

How do I know that the God of the Bible is the true and living God? How do I know that the Bible is true?

The answer is Israel. Any man can write a book, but no man can create a nation and write the history of that nation in advance.

Israel became a nation in 1948. But the Bible had predicted this long ago in Isaiah 11:11.

In that day the Lord will reach out his hand a second time to bring back the remnant of his people - those who remain in Assyria and northern Egypt; in southern Egypt, Ethiopia, and Elam; in Babylonia, Hamath, and all the distant coastlands. (Isaiah 11:11 NLT)

Albert Barnes (1798-12-01 to 1870-12-24) in his Barnes' Notes on the Bible has this commentary on Isaiah 11:11.
QUOTE
The second time - שׁנית shênı̂yth. This word properly means, as it is here translated, the second time, implying that the prophet here speaks of a deliverance which would resemble, in some respects, a "former" deliverance or recovery. By the former recovery to which he here refers, he cannot mean the deliverance from Egypt under Moses, for at that time there was no recovery from scattered and distant nations. Besides, if "that" was the reference by the former deliverance, then that mentioned here as the 'second' deliverance would be that from the Babylonian captivity. But on the return from that captivity, there was not a collecting of the Jews from all the nations here specified. When the Jews were led back to Judea under Nehemiah, there is no record of their having been collected from 'Egypt,' or from 'Cush,' or from 'the islands of the sea.' It is evident, therefore, I think, that by the former deliverance to which the prophet here alludes - the deliverance which was to precede that designated here as the "second" - he refers to the return from the captivity of Babylon; and by the 'second,' to some still more future recovery that should take place under the administration of the Messiah. This is further confirmed from the fact that the whole scope of the prophecy points to that future period.
UNQUOTE

Remember that Albert Barnes died on Christmas Eve 1870, well before 1948. Yet by careful reading of Isaiah 11:11, he was able to conclude that Isaiah 11:11 refer to "some still more future recovery that should take place".

Profit And Loss

For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. (Philippians 1:21 KJV)

If you live for Christ, your death will be a gain. You will gain eternal life with a new body.
If you live for money, your death will be a loss. You cannot bring your money with you after your death.

Trumpet And Rapture

Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. (1 Corinthians 15:51-52 ESV)

For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord. (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 NASB)

Sequence of events, according to 1 Corinthians 15:51-52 and 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17:
  1. The trumpet will sound;
  2. The Lord will descend;
  3. We shall all be changed;
  4. The dead in Christ will rise first;
  5. Those alive will be caught up together with them in the clouds;
  6. All will meet the Lord in the air and shall always be with Him;
  7. This will happened in the twinkling of an eye.
If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to myself, so that where I am you may be also. (John 14:3 CSB)

"Men of Galilee," they said, "why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven." (Acts 1:11 NIV)

The Tongue

Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one's life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God's likeness.
(James 3:5-9 NIV)

But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. (Matthew 15:18 ESV)

Does a fig tree produce olives, or a grapevine produce figs? No, and you can't draw fresh water from a salty spring. (James 3:12 NLT)

Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. (Colossians 4:6 NIV)

Little Faith (ὀλιγοπιστίαν) vs Lack of Faith (ἀπιστίαν)

He said to them, "Because of your little faith (ὀλιγοπιστίαν). For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you." (Matthew 17:20 ESV)

And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief (ἀπιστίαν): for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. (Matthew 17:20 KJV)

Is it little faith (ὀλιγοπιστίαν) or lack of faith (ἀπιστίαν)?

Little faith (ὀλιγοπιστίαν) does not make sense, since having as little faith as a mustard seed is sufficient to move mountains.

According to "matthew - ὀλιγοπιστίαν vs ἀπιστίαν in Mat 17:20 - Biblical Hermeneutics Stack Exchange", general consensus of opinion of the textual critics tend to favour ὀλιγοπιστίαν over ἀπιστίαν.

Small Regular Deposits

And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. (2 Corinthians 3:18 ESV)

There was no big memorable events to mark my relationship with the founding pastor of JSM. However, his impact on me was tremendous, like small little deposits that built up over the years, just like my mother's influence on me.

At my mother's funeral, I could not find words to express this feeling. Thanks to brother Kok Hoong who shared the following by WhatsApp on Thursday 3rd January (the day pastor went to glory), I found the words.

QUOTE
In the winter of 2009, a large passenger plane made an emergency landing in New York's Hudson River. The pilot, Captain Chesley Sullenberger, who landed the plane safely with no casualties, was later asked about those moments in the air when he was faced with a life-or-death decision. "One way of looking at this," he said, "might be that for 42 years I've been making small, regular deposits in this bank of experience, education, and training. And on [that day] the balance was sufficient so that I could make a very large withdrawal."
UNQUOTE

Both founding pastor and my mother had made small regular deposits in my bank of experience. It helped to shape my world view and I thank God for their influence in my life.

Humility

For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich. (2 Corinthians 8:9 ESV)

Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant,c being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:5-11 ESV)

New Year Resolutions

I decide to make some resolutions this year.

First, as advised by Rev Stephen Schaefer, I am going to pray daily (and whenever I can) to be filled with the Spirit so that I have no room for other things (Ephesians 5:18).

Next, I am going to pray that what ever I do, I will do it to the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31).

Finally, I pray that my tongue will speak gracious words that will glorify God. Again like what Rev Stephen Schaefer had preached, we are little Christs (i.e. anointed ones, kings, prophets and priests), so we have to speak gracious words of comfort like a priest (Colossians 4:6).

And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, (Ephesians 5:18 ESV)
So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. (1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV)
Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person. (Colossians 4:6 ESV)

I have the confidence that these prayers will be answered because it is prayed according to God's will (1 John 5:14).

And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. (1 John 5:14 ESV)
