Unlike other religions, the objective of living the Christian life is not to earn merits for Heaven by good works. We are already assured of our place in Heaven. We live the Christian life to glorify God. We live it as a gratitude to our God.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. (Matthew 5:16 KJV)
Whether therefore you eat, or drink, or whatsoever you do, do all to the glory of God. (1 Corinthians 10:31 KJV)
Living the Christian life is difficult. The main incentive to live a good life is to earn merit is gone. Thus we need the Holy Spirit to enpower us. We live by grace.
