An Atheist's Confession of Faith

Only fools say in their hearts, "There is no God." They are corrupt, and their actions are evil; not one of them does good!  (Psalm 14:1, Psalm 53:1 NLT)

All men live by faith, both the just and unjust. It is impossible for men not to have a belief system. It is by faith that they have eternal life or eternal damnation because their belief system is either true or false.

Atheism and secular humanism are belief systems, just like any other religions. Here is an atheist's confession of faith by Richard Charles Lewontin (1929–2021) quoted from this article "Remembering a Biologist’s Remarkable Confession of Faith | Mind Matters".

QUOTE
In 1997, Lewontin published a review of celebrity science commentator Carl Sagan's book The Demon-Haunted World in which he blurted:

"Our willingness to accept scientific claims that are against common sense is the key to an understanding of the real struggle between science and the supernatural. We take the side of science in spite of the patent absurdity of some of its constructs, in spite of its failure to fulfill many of its extravagant promises of health and life, in spite of the tolerance of the scientific community for unsubstantiated just-so stories, because we have a prior commitment, a commitment to materialism. It is not that the methods and institutions of science somehow compel us to accept a material explanation of the phenomenal world, but, on the contrary, that we are forced by our a priori adherence to material causes to create an apparatus of investigation and a set of concepts that produce material explanations, no matter how counter-intuitive, no matter how mystifying to the uninitiated. Moreover, that materialism is absolute, for we cannot allow a Divine Foot in the door. The eminent Kant scholar Lewis Beck used to say that anyone who could believe in God could believe in anything. To appeal to an omnipotent deity is to allow that at any moment the regularities of nature may be ruptured, that miracles may happen."

Richard Lewontin "Billions and Billions of Demons" at New York Review of Books (January 9, 1997)
UNQUOTE

This is a link to a shorter version of quotation taken from A-Z Quotes | Quotes for All Occasions.

So, any scientific evidence for God would be rejected by atheists because they have "a commitment to materialism ... forced by our a priori adherence to material causes" and the belief that "materialism is absolute, for we cannot allow a Divine Foot in the door ... that anyone who could believe in God could believe in anything".

For what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood from His workmanship, so that men are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified Him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but they became futile in their thinking and darkened in their foolish hearts. (Romans 1:19-21 BSB)

Professing to be wise, they became fools, and they changed the glory of the immortal God into a likeness of an image of mortal man and birds and quadrupeds and creeping things. (Romans 1:22-23 BLB)

Gods of the Gaps

Thus shall you say to them: "The gods who did not make the heavens and the earth shall perish from the earth and from under the heavens." (Jeremiah 10:11 ESV)

Secular humanists believed that gods were created to fill our gaps in knowledge. When they did not know how rain was made, they created a rain god. When they could not explain the thunder, they created a thunder god. As our knowledge increase, there will be less and less requirement for divine explanation. Eventually, when we know everything, god or gods will cease to exist.

And this is exactly what the Bible said about the so-called gods who did not make the heavens and earth. They will vanish from the earth and from under the heavens (Jeremiah 10:11). And exactly as the Bible said, there is one God who stubbornly refused to go away. This is the God that created the heavens and the earth. Till today, science could not come up with a satisfactory answer to creation. So, the God that created the heavens and the earth is still keeping His job.

For thus says the LORD, who created the heavens (He is the God who formed the earth and made it, He established it and did not create it a waste place, but formed it to be inhabited), "I am the LORD, and there is none else. (Isaiah 45:18 NASB95)

Setting KPI For God

For behold, I am raising up the Chaldeans - that ruthless and impetuous nation which marches through the breadth of the earth to seize dwellings not their own. (Habakkuk 1:6 BSB)

Men love to set KPI. They even set KPI for God on how a perfect God should be like. Did God accept the KPI?

Crime and Punishment
When Israel sinned, God ought to use a more righteous nation to punish Israel or punish Israel Himself. But God raised the cruel Babylonians to punish Israel (Habakkuk 1:6). And then God later punished the Babylonians for punishing Israel (Jeremiah 25:12).

Word Transmission
Until heaven and earth shall pass away, not one jot or one tittle shall pass away from the law (Matthew 5:18) but in the course of transmission of text of the Bible, there are some minor changes in the jot and tittle. It is less than 0.01%, but still, it is one missing jot or one additional tittle. But the KJV-only believers cannot believe that the almighty God could not preserve a perfect original text for us. God would fail our KPI for Him if He cannot do that. In fact, He did more than that. He even divinely inspired the KJV translation. God passed our KPI for Him with flying colours. Did God really care about our KPI for Him?

Word Accuracy
It is appointed for man to die once (Hebrews 9:27) but Lazarus died twice (John 11:43). Did the Bible contradict itself? Is the mustard seed the smallest of all seeds (Matthew 13:32, Mark 4:31)? If Jesus was to be in the grave three days and nights (Matthew 12:40), how do we fit those between Good Friday and Easter Sunday? Did Bible meant it to be 72 hours exactly because God is very precise? Three days and nights must be 72 hours because God is perfect to the jot and tittle. Are we celebrating Good Friday and Easter Sunday wrongly? Or are we interpreting the Bible more strictly than God Himself?

Christian Witness
The Bible recorded that God use holy men like the apostles to spread the gospel. But in our days, God chose to use the colonialist, the slave traders and drug traffickers to spread the gospel. Africans were enslaved, taken from their home and sold to Christian lands to be given the opportunity to hear the gospel. Opium traders humiliate China to bring the gospel to their land. Shouldn't a perfect and holy God do better than that? Maybe He should roll out the red carpet to welcome the Africans and Chinese into the Kingdom of God and today, there will be no Black Life Matter movement and there will be no Chinese Communist party harping on the century of humiliation by Western imperial powers. Looks like we have better ideas than God.

World Creation
Then the ultimate KPI, the favourite of unbelievers and atheists, why can't the perfectly good, almighty and all-knowing God create a world without sin? Then Jesus would not need to come to the world to die for sin. Atheists use God's failure in this KPI to prove His non-existence. If God exists, why are there evil and sufferings in the world? Why can't the One who knows the end from the beginning think ahead?

What are you going to do with a God that fail your KPI?

From that time on many of His disciples turned back and no longer walked with Him. (John 6:66 BSB)

So Jesus asked the Twelve, "Do you want to leave too?" Simon Peter replied, "Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that You are the Holy One of God." (John 6:67-69 BSB)

Secular Humanist Artificial Intelligence Myth

We're headed toward a situation where AI is vastly smarter than humans and I think that time frame is less than five years from now. But that doesn't mean that everything goes to hell in five years. It just means that things get unstable or weird.
Elon Musk: The Maureen Dowd Interview - The New York Times 2020-07-25

Secular humanists think that religions are myths. But secular humanists also create their own myths.

Secular humanists believe in nature and the material world. God or gods are invoked to fill in the blanks in our knowledge. For example, when we do not know how rain and thunder works, we created rain god and thunder god. As our knowledge increase, there will be less and less requirement for divine explanation. Eventually, when we know everything, god or gods will cease to exist.

Why do secular humanists think like this?

It is because they have a superior view of man and an inferior view of God and God's creation, also known as nature. They believe that in due time, man will understand everything. Because they have a superior view of man, they also believe that man's creation, also known as artificial intelligence, can take over the world.

The Great Awokening

The following quote is taken from Wikipedia:

QUOTE
Woke (/ˈwoʊk/ WOHK) is a term, originating in the United States, that originally referred to awareness about racial prejudice and discrimination. It subsequently came to encompass an awareness of other issues of social inequality, for instance regarding gender and sexual orientation. Since the late 2010s, it has also been used as a general term for left-wing political movements and perspectives which emphasise the identity politics of people of color, LGBT people, and women.

There is one more perspective of woke - it is anti-White and anti-Bible.

Failed Eco-pocalyptic Predictions

Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold of the dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; and he threw him into the abyss, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he would not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were completed; after these things he must be released for a short time. (Revelation 20:1-3 NASB)

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. (Revelation 21:1 ESV)

Two years ago (2018-11-25) Facebook lock me out of my own account because they suspect someone is posting on my behalf. I wonder which post caused them to think that my account was hacked? I suspect because I posted this article "The Big Bad Forces of Censorship and Intimidation in Climate Science. Willie Soon, PhD - YouTube" on the day before (2018-11-24) in Facebook.

Climate change and ecology will not end the world. The Bible predicted a golden age of a thousand years before the current world will finally come to an end and a new world will be created. But those who refuse to believe continue to write dire predictions that never come true. It is amazing to know that people continue to believe in climate change despite all these fail predictions.

Globalisation And Virus

Trump started the anti-globalisation drive in 2018. He started a trade war with China and try to break up the global supply chain. He was met with global opposition.

Then come covid-19. It made the world wake up to the global supply chain's dependency on China. It make the West aware of its vulnerability.

I believe this is part of the steps that will lead to the ten toes revived Roman empire. For the longest time since the end of the war in 1945, Europe was in the stage of decolonization and feeling very contrite about their colonisation, especially for the woke left, the liberals, the atheists and the climate worriers. This have to change so that the Roman empire can be revived and the beast can conquer the world with Christianity.

What Trump cannot, the covid-19 virus will complete. The global supply chain will break up and Europe will start thinking of how to secure its supply.

As the toes were partly iron and partly clay, so this kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle. (Daniel 2:42 NIV)

Paul versus Mao

For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. (Romans 14:17 ESV)

"A revolution is not a dinner party, or writing an essay, or painting a picture, or doing embroidery; it cannot be so refined, so leisurely and gentle, so temperate, kind, courteous, restrained and magnanimous. A revolution is an insurrection, an act of violence by which one class overthrows another." Mao Tse-tung

How different is Paul from that evil man, even as both talked about not eating and drinking. One is about peace and joy, the other about insurrection and violence. Woe to those who believe in violence and class struggle. They do not want peace and shall not have any.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23 ESV)

Primordial Soup

Quote taken from this BBC website, "BBC - Earth - The secret of how life on Earth began":
"Every single person who died before Darwin published Origin of Species in 1859 was ignorant of humanity's origins, because they knew nothing of evolution."

Thank God for those who were born before 1859! At least some of them knew this, which is far better:
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. (Genesis 1:27 KJV)

The following was also quoted from the same article:
QUOTE
Darwin knew that it was a profound question, but - perhaps wary of starting yet another fight with the Church - he only seems to have discussed the issue in a letter written in 1871. His excitable language reveals that he knew the deep significance of the question:
"But if (& oh what a big if) we could conceive in some warm little pond with all sorts of ammonia & phosphoric salts, - light, heat, electricity &c present, that a protein compound was chemically formed, ready to undergo still more complex changes..."
In other words, what if there was once a small body of water, filled with simple organic compounds and bathed in sunlight. Some of those compounds might combine to form a life-like substance such as a protein, which could then start evolving and becoming more complex.
It was a sketchy idea. But it would become the basis of the first hypothesis for how life began.
This idea emerged from an unexpected place. You might think that this daring piece of free thinking would have been developed in a democratic country with a tradition of free speech: perhaps the United States. But in fact the first hypothesis for the origin of life was invented in a savagely totalitarian country, where free thinking was stamped out: the USSR.
In Stalin's Russia, everything was under the control of the state. That included people's ideas, even on subjects - like biology - that seem unrelated to Communist politics.
Most famously, Stalin effectively banned scientists from studying conventional genetics. Instead he imposed the ideas of a farm worker named Trofim Lysenko, which he thought were more in line with Communist ideology. Scientists working on genetics were forced to publicly support Lysenko's ideas, or risk ending up in a labour camp.
It was in this repressive environment that Alexander Oparin carried out his research into biochemistry. He was able to keep working because he was a loyal Communist: he supported Lysenko's ideas and even received the Order of Lenin, the highest decoration that could be bestowed on someone living in the USSR.
In 1924, Oparin published his book The Origin of Life. In it he set out a vision for the birth of life that was startlingly similar to Darwin's warm little pond.
Oparin imagined what Earth was like when it was newly formed. The surface was searingly hot, as rocks from space plunged down onto it and impacted. It was a mess of semi-molten rocks, containing a huge range of chemicals – including many based on carbon.
Eventually the Earth cooled enough for water vapour to condense into liquid water, and the first rain fell. Before long Earth had oceans, which were hot and rich in carbon-based chemicals. Now two things could happen.
First, the various chemicals could react with each other to form lots of new compounds, some of which would be more complex. Oparin supposed that the molecules central to life, like sugars and amino acids, could all have formed in Earth's waters.
Second, some of the chemicals began to form microscopic structures. Many organic chemicals do not dissolve in water: for example, oil forms a layer on top of water. But when some of these chemicals contact water they form spherical globules called "coacervates", which can be up to 0.01cm (0.004 inches) across.
If you watch coacervates under a microscope, they behave unnervingly like living cells. They grow and change shape, and sometimes divide into two. They can also take in chemicals from the surrounding water, so life-like chemicals can become concentrated inside them. Oparin proposed that coacervates were the ancestors of modern cells.
Five years later in 1929, the English biologist J. B. S. Haldane independently proposed some very similar ideas in a short article published in the Rationalist Annual.
Haldane had already made enormous contributions to evolutionary theory, helping to integrate Darwin's ideas with the emerging science of genetics.
He was also a larger-than-life character. On one occasion, he suffered a perforated eardrum thanks to some experiments with decompression chambers, but later wrote that: "the drum generally heals up; and if a hole remains in it, although one is somewhat deaf, one can blow tobacco smoke out of the ear in question, which is a social accomplishment."
Just like Oparin, Haldane outlined how organic chemicals could build up in water, "[until] the primitive oceans reached the consistency of hot dilute soup". This set the stage for "the first living or half-living things" to form, and for each one to become enclosed in "an oily film".
It is telling that of all the biologists in the world, it was Oparin and Haldane who proposed this. The idea that living organisms formed by purely chemical means, without a god or even a "life force", was radical. Like Darwin's theory of evolution before it, it flew in the face of Christianity.
That suited the USSR just fine. The Soviet regime was officially atheist, and its leaders were eager to support materialistic explanations for profound phenomena like life. Haldane was also an atheist, and a devoted communist to boot.
"At that time, to accept or not accept this idea depended essentially on personalities: whether they were religious or whether they supported left or communist ideas," says origin-of-life expert Armen Mulkidjanian of the University of Osnabrück in Germany. "In the Soviet Union they were accepted happily because they didn't need God. In the western world, if you look for people who were thinking in this direction, they all were lefties, communists and so on."
The idea that life formed in a primordial soup of organic chemicals became known as the Oparin-Haldane hypothesis. It was neat and compelling, but there was one problem. There was no experimental evidence to back it up. This would not arrive for almost a quarter of a century.

The Problem With Secular Humanism

Problem 1 - God
Secular Humanism assumes that God does not exist. The Bible assumes that God exists. This is a problem for both. The existence or non-existence of God cannot be proven. We are too small and too brief for that.

Bible's solution
The Bible never attempt to prove the existence of God. But the Bible make strenuous effort to prove the authenticity and veracity of the Word of God. In fact, this is the area where Christianity really shines. Christianity is an auditable religion! Other religions were started by one founder who had an idea or a vision (unprovable) or visited by an unseen angel (unseen, therefore nobody know). Buddha, like the secular humanist, offer a solution that does not need God and we have no proof if nirvana is really a solution because nobody ever come back after death to say that nirvana is real. Islam claim that the Koran is the word of God but offer meaningless proofs.

Secular Humanism non-solution
Secular humanism assumes that God does not exist and then proceed to use that as a basis for all their beliefs.

Problem 2 - Reason for Being
Why are we here? If there is no life after death, why should I do good? Why can't I be a Hedonist? Let us face this - if God does not exist and our existence is only temporal, then we all can do evil. This is reasonable and logical. In the first place, why is there good and evil? Evolution is about survival of the fittest, not the noblest. Why should I accept the humanist definition of "goodness"? Why can't I create my own standard and call evil good and good evil? Why must I accept some moral authority which have no basis other than being from another human or from some Western European culture?

How Religions Got Started - The Secular Humanist Viewpoint

Secular humanist believed that religion got invented because men appeared to be evolutionarily predisposed to religion or religious like behaviour. Below are quotes from this article, "The Human Brain Evolved to Believe in Gods - The Crux":

QUOTE
Leading scholars propose a two-phase hypothesis (here, here): First, our ancestors evolved certain mental abilities, useful for survival and reproduction, which predisposed them to religious beliefs. Then, from the multitude of beliefs that emerged, particular religions spread and persisted because their deities and rituals promoted cooperation among practitioners.
...
Evolved features of our brains, such as Theory of Mind and over-imitation, likely caused the emergence of religions in human societies. It doesn’t take supernatural beings to explain why so many people believe in them - just natural evolutionary processes.
UNQUOTE

As such, to secular humanists, all religions are equal. There is no special revelation in any of them. And science has been able to prove that many of the religious practices are mere superstitions. Because of this, secular humanists refused to give Christianity as special preference. They said if we were to look at the 6 days creation seriously, then we also have to look at the Hindu view that the world is supported by four elephants on a big turtle seriously.

Evolution Is Evil

"[If] there is mercy in nature, it is accidental. Nature is neither kind nor cruel but indifferent." - Richard Dawkins, atheist

If evolution is true, survival is for the fittest. I see nothing wrong to kill a million or a billion for my own survival if I have the means (therefore the fitness) to do so. I am fit, therefore I am right.

Praising Faith Instead Of God

Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to Your name give glory because of Your lovingkindness, because of Your truth. (Psalm 115:1 NASB)

Atheists do not believe in God or anything supernatural. However, there are people who accomplished great things because of their religious beliefs. Since atheists do not believe in the supernatural, they attribute the success of these people to their great faith. They praise the faith of the person, rather than the object whom the person have faith in. After all, there is such thing as "Placebo Effect" in which faith plays an important part.

Christians should praise God, the object of their faith, rather than faith itself. Because our belief in God is not a "Placebo Effect". Our God is the effective cause.

How Religions Got Started

Many believed that religion is invented because men realize that limitation of their understanding and control of the world they lived in. They created gods to explain the things that they cannot control or understand so that they would not look stupid, but instead, appear to understand certain mysteries. Many of these secular people believed that religions evolved first as a polytheism and evolved into monotheism as the thoughts of the people progressed.

And people became even more progressive and came up science and the scientific method that taught the people to think, to experiment and to prove. As science progress, ignorance was stripped away and the control of the environment increase. One by one, the gods started to lose their jobs. They were no longer required as an explanation for many things.

Secular people treat religion as part of the progress of mankind, something that may still have some good, but not always relevant to the modern world. Secular governments treat all religions as equal, tolerating them as long as they respect state control.

While the petty gods slipped away, one God continues to hold out against science, the God that created the heavens and the earth. While science has progressed to explained most things, science is still unable to explain creation. The best science can come up with is the Big Bang theory, but what caused the Big Bang? Nobody knows. So the God that created the heavens and the earth is still needed to fill the gap. Will He lose His job like the rest of the petty gods?

"Well," He said, "No." For He has another explanation on how religions were started. Men were created to believe in God. Religions were started when men refused to believe in the one true God. But since men were created to believe, something had to replace the true creator. Thus all kinds of gods were invented as a substitute. So first there was monotheism. Then it degenerated into polytheism. Since these gods are false, they could not withstand the scrutiny of science and they started to look stupid, giving all religions a bad name (called superstitions).

For God's wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of people who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth, since what can be known about God is evident among them, because God has shown it to them. For His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, being understood through what He has made. As a result, people are without excuse. For though they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God or show gratitude. Instead, their thinking became nonsense, and their senseless minds were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man, birds, four-footed animals, and reptiles.

Therefore God delivered them over in the cravings of their hearts to sexual impurity, so that their bodies were degraded among themselves. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served something created instead of the Creator, who is praised forever. Amen. (Romans 1:18-25 HCSB)

History According to Evolution

In the beginning (about 13.7 billion years ago) there was a big bang. The big bang begat matter and energy.

Now this is the generation of matter. Matter began as particles. Particles begat atoms and molecules. Atoms and molecules begat stars. Stars begat planets and among them, the planet earth.

Now this is the generation of planet earth. Right conditions on earth allow molecules to begat DNA. DNA begat cells. Cells begat multi-cellular organisms, among them were apes. And apes begat humans and humans invented religion.

Now this is the generation of religion. At first humans are ignorant. There were many things in nature they did not understand and could not control. They were fearful and invented a new concept called god, which they believed were in control of those things. They worshipped these gods and brought them offerings, hoping that these gods would then return them some favors. However, as knowledge increase and power over the nature grew, these polytheistic gods became too small to be respected.

Then Pharaoh Akhenaten in Egypt invented monotheism by forcing every Egyptian to worship Aten. Moses learned monotheism from the Egyptians and made Yahweh Israel's only God. At first Yahweh was just a tribal God of Israel. As Israel's political fortune sunk, they compensated by making Yahweh bigger and bigger, until He became the creator of heavens and the earth. During the time of Babylonian exile, myths about the origins of Israel, filled with miracles, were written into the Old Testament. Then came Jesus and more myths and miracles were added and these were called the New Testament.

Now the White Europeans were more evolved than other humans. Their knowledge in science and technology increased greatly. Many mysteries were solved and they made the forces of nature their servants. They discovered evolution and the big bang and realized that God is not required for the creation and functioning of the universe. Everything can be explained by science. Thus atheism was invented. In future, as knowledge increases and the need for gods to explain mysteries decreases, monotheism and polytheism will become extinct, like the dinosaurs.

For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. (Romans 1:21-23 NASB)

But the Bible tells us that it was monotheism that came first, then degenerated into polytheism and atheism. Evolution thrives in ignorance. As knowledge increase, evolution will become harder and harder to explain. Eventually, it will be proven scientifically that evolution is simply impossible and then it will become extinct, like abiogenesis.

Liberty Must Rest On Truth

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. (Galatians 3:28 ESV)
All are equal.

If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? (1 Corinthians 12:17 ESV)
But there are functional diversities.

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-10 ESV)
And there is such a thing as right and wrong.

Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! (Isaiah 5:20 ESV)
It cannot be ignored.

Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who doesn't need to be ashamed, correctly teaching the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15 HCSB)

You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. (John 8:32 HCSB)
True liberty will follow, when the truth is believed.

Which Came First, Intelligence or System

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. (Genesis 1:1 NASB, NIV, NLT)

Now that the chicken-and-egg problem is solved, we cannot apply this analogy to the First Cause question.

Instead of chicken-and-egg problem, now I have intelligence-and-system problem. Which came first, intelligence or system? Did an intelligence designed and created the system, or a system of laws evolved intelligence accidentally and mindlessly?

The current theory of the beginning of the universe is the big bang theory. The big bang caused the existence of time and space. But what about the laws? Did the big bang created all these laws at the same time, or the laws have a separate existence? If the laws of the universe have a separate existence, where were they held?

Perception of God Determined by Perception of Sin

And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation. (Exodus 34:6-7 KJV)

God, in His proclamation to Moses, declared Himself to be merciful and gracious. However, many atheists and unbelievers have a very different opinion of Him.

Richard Dawkins, in his book "The God Delusion", wrote of God as follows:
QUOTE
The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character of all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.

Let's not mince words: if the story of the Flood is to be believed, God is a moral monster. To say his response to the alleged wickedness of humans is disproportionate is a gross understatement. Moreover, God engages in conduct that we would expect from the worst dictators, namely collective punishment that sweeps in the innocent along with the guilty. Children, presumably, were among those drowned (unless we assume that wicked adults had no offspring) as were most all of the animals, who bore no responsibility whatsoever for the misdeeds of humans. Intentionally drowning a kitten is conduct we'd expect of some psychopathic juvenile, not a loving deity.

"I think God is 100% benevolent but only 80% effective," - Jim Holt

Why such big discrepancy in God's own view of Himself and the views of atheists and unbelievers of Him? The main reason is the perception of sin. God views Himself as extremely merciful despite the hatefulness of sin committed by men. The atheists and unbelievers have very low view of sin, believing that most sins are okay and can be ignored.

Assumptions Are Required In Carbon Dating Calibration

The following are the first and last questions taken from this web page Answers to Creationist Attacks on Carbon-14 Dating | NCSE.

QUOTE
Question: How does carbon-14 dating work?
Answer: Cosmic rays in the upper atmosphere are constantly converting the isotope nitrogen-14 (N-14) into carbon-14 (C-14 or radiocarbon). Living organisms are constantly incorporating this C-14 into their bodies along with other carbon isotopes. When the organisms die, they stop incorporating new C-14, and the old C-14 starts to decay back into N-14 by emitting beta particles. The older an organism's remains are, the less beta radiation it emits because its C-14 is steadily dwindling at a predictable rate. So, if we measure the rate of beta decay in an organic sample, we can calculate how old the sample is. C-14 decays with a half-life of 5,730 years.

Question: What specifically does C-14 dating show that creates problems for the creation model?
Answer: C-14 dates show that the last glaciation started to subside around twenty thousand years ago. But the young-earth creationists at ICR and elsewhere insist that, if an ice age occurred, it must have come and gone far less than ten thousand years ago, sometime after Noah's flood. Therefore, the only way creationists can hang on to their chronology is to poke all the holes they can into radiocarbon dating. However, as we have seen, it has survived their most ardent attacks.

Radiocarbon dating must be calibrated.  How do we calibrate it?  Well, we take a carbon sample from a material of a known age and date that.  Then we compare the two and adjust the radiocarbon date to the known date.  By making thousands (if not millions) of these adjustments we get a very good idea of how old a piece of unknown material can be.

Yes, this is a range of possible dates.  All radiometric dating systems are  range.  The 2004 calibration set is here.  Basically, the calibration curves are off by no more than 16 years over the historical range (6,000 years or so) and no more than 163 years over the last 20,000 years.  That’s less than 1% if you’re interested in that sort of thing.  The 2009 calibration set extends the ‘well calibrated range’ to 50,000 years using the varves in a Japanese lake.  Varves are cool.  I just like saying ‘varve’.  But this is already almost a thousand words and I’ve only done ONE! response to these clowns.

Long story short, scientists have always known that variations in C-14 concentration happen.  This is unlike the creationists which think it happened, but can’t be bothered to check.

QUOTE
From Nature magazine

The carbon clock is getting reset. Climate records from a Japanese lake are set to improve the accuracy of the dating technique, which could help to shed light on archaeological mysteries such as why Neanderthals became extinct.

Carbon dating is used to work out the age of organic material - in effect, any living thing. The technique hinges on carbon-14, a radioactive isotope of the element that, unlike other more stable forms of carbon, decays away at a steady rate. Organisms capture a certain amount of carbon-14 from the atmosphere when they are alive. By measuring the ratio of the radio isotope to non-radioactive carbon, the amount of carbon-14 decay can be worked out, thereby giving an age for the specimen in question.

But that assumes that the amount of carbon-14 in the atmosphere was constant - any variation would speed up or slow down the clock. The clock was initially calibrated by dating objects of known age such as Egyptian mummies and bread from Pompeii; work that won Willard Libby the 1960 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. But even he "realized that there probably would be variation", says Christopher Bronk Ramsey, a geochronologist at the University of Oxford, UK, who led the latest work, published today in Science. Various geologic, atmospheric and solar processes can influence atmospheric carbon-14 levels.

Since the 1960s, scientists have started accounting for the variations by calibrating the clock against the known ages of tree rings. As a rule, carbon dates are younger than calendar dates: a bone carbon-dated to 10,000 years is around 11,000 years old, and 20,000 carbon years roughly equates to 24,000 calendar years.

The problem, says Bronk Ramsey, is that tree rings provide a direct record that only goes as far back as about 14,000 years. Marine records, such as corals, have been used to push farther back in time, but these are less robust because levels of carbon-14 in the atmosphere and the ocean are not identical and tend shift with changes in ocean circulation.

Bronk Ramsey's team aimed to fill this gap by using sediment from bed of Lake Suigetsu, west of Tokyo. Two distinct sediment layers have formed in the lake every summer and winter over tens of thousands of years. The researchers collected roughly 70-metre core samples from the lake and painstakingly counted the layers to come up with a direct record stretching back 52,000 years. Preserved leaves in the cores - "they look fresh as if they've fallen very recently", Bronk Ramsey says - yielded 651 carbon dates that could be compared to the calendar dates of the sediment they were found in.

The recalibrated clock won't force archaeologists to abandon old measurements wholesale, says Bronk Ramsey, but it could help to narrow the window of key events in human history. "If you're trying to look at archaeological sites at the order of 30,000 or 40,000 years ago, the ages may shift by only a few hundred years but that may be significant in putting them before or after changes in climate," he says.

QUOTE
Reliability of radiocarbon dating
Radiocarbon dating has been studied at great length over the past few decades, and its strengths and weaknesses are very well understood at this point in time. For instance, even in the 1950s, when Willard Libby first developed the process, it was recognized that the scheme assumes that the level of carbon-14 in the atmosphere is constant. But researchers have known at least since 1969 that the carbon-14 level has not been constant, so that the radiocarbon clock needs to be "calibrated."

As a result, various schemes are used to correct and calibrate radiocarbon dates, including:
  1. Dendochronology: counting tree rings.
  2. Measurements of coral or other carbonate structures such as stalagmites, corroborated using uranium-thorium radiometric dating.
  3. Optically stimulated luminescence dating. This is based on the fact that stimulating mineral samples with blue, green or infared light causes a luminescent signal to be emitted, stemming from electron energy that is proportional to the amount of background radiation the specimen has undergone since burial. This scheme can be used to date items between about 300 years to over 100,000 years, and thus can be used to double-check and calibrate radiocarbon dates [Optical2011].
  4. Varve sediments: Counting the alternating light and dark bands in glacial lake beds that record the annual passage of seasons.
In each case, radiocarbon dates, determined by well-established procedures and calculations, are compared directly with dates determined by the above methods, thus permitting the radiocarbon dates to be accurately calibrated with distinct and independent dating techniques.

Conclusion
The amount of carbon-14 in the atmosphere is not constant. The carbon clock need calibration against objects of known age. So everything hinges on these objects, like the 70-metre core samples from the sediment from bed of Lake Suigetsu, assuming that "distinct sediment layers have formed in the lake every summer and winter over tens of thousands of years."

The Bible tells us that there was a great flood. What is the impact of this flood on the carbon-14? What were the conditions in the antediluvian world? What was the amount of carbon-14 in the pre-flood world? No scientist takes that condition into account because they assume that the flood had never happened.

In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on the same day all the fountains of the great deep burst open, and the floodgates of the sky were opened. (Genesis 7:11 NASB)

Evidence Not Enough?

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. (Romans 1:18-20 ESV)
